Pastor Richie King's Message

Let the Journey Begin….Again!

As we enter the season of Lent, we are confronted with a face in the mirror that looks back at us and asks, “What have I done the past year that I can do better, and what have I done right for the children of God?”  Lent, beginning with Ash Wednesday, is our annual trek to look inward and make the improvements we feel might be lacking. It is a momentous time of self-reflection.

We have been studying the book of Hebrews the past six weeks leading up to Lent, and we have already begun that self-reflection. Hebrews was written to the people who were wavering from all they had learned about Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. They were listening to those who said the laws of Moses are enough. It lays out a very solid case for whom this Jesus was.

When Jesus died on the cross, the curtain in the Temple was torn, symbolizing that the new curtain and the new Temple were to be Jesus Christ. No longer would the highest of priests have to go behind the sacred curtain and speak with God for the people. Now we the people go straight to the temple. And in accepting that Jesus Christ is our Lord and savior, He, the new Temple, dwells within our hearts. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” - John 1:14.

We live in some turbulent times. There is a lot of whining, crying and gnashing of teeth over the past election. There is so much hate that the people God created are not using their gifts for the improvement of human existence. We are called and charged to love the Lord our God and our neighbor as ourselves. That is all we need as children of God to work on as individuals. It is my hope and my prayer that the people of God will spend time this Lenten season to look inward and ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance to grow us and use us this coming year with a joy in our hearts that surpasses all understanding.

I hope to see you all as we at Cutchogue Presbyterian embark on our Lenten Journey.
